Consumption of refined carbohydrates should be lessened and healthier forms of fats should be chosen over unhealthy ones. When you eat also affects your bodys blood sugar levels. Complex carbohydrates take more time to be digested and converted into fats compared to simple carbohydrates which can increase the blood sugar levels in a short period of time. Mushrooms, cabbages, tomatoes, broccoli are some good examples of vegetables you should eat. However, there are vegetables you should avoid because of their high starch content like potatoes, corns, and peas. Vegetables can be consumed for a maximum of five servings per day.


Fruits are also great food choices for diabetics. Fruits are high in fiber and are packed with nutrients. Apart from controlling your blood sugar, they help detoxify the digestive system of the body. Just like vegetables, there are certain fruits you cannot consume because of their high fructose (sugar) content. Examples of such fruits are grapes and mangoes. Fruits like oranges, berries, apples, and pears are fine for consumption. It is recommended that you eat at least three to four servings of fruits daily.


When it comes to white meat, fish is your best option. Proteins from fishes are as potent as those found in pork and beef without the extra fats. Fishes also contain omega 3 fatty acid, which is a good form of fat. Omega 3 is known to prevent heart diseases, liver ailments, and regulate the bloods sugar levels. Mackerel, tuna, and salmon are good types of fishes. Eat fish at least two to three times per week.
